Stress at Work

You experience stress at work when you are not able to meet the demands of your job. The most stressful jobs place heavy demands on you but give you very little control over how to do your job.

Stress can affect your health if you are exposed to stressful working conditions on an ongoing basis. Stress can cause or worsen health problems such as

  • heart disease
  • diabetes
  • stomach and bowel problems
  • asthma
  • rheumatoid arthritis
What causes stress at work?
Examples of things that cause stress at work include:
  • poor communication
  • unclear job demands
  • workplace conflict and disrespect
  • lack of flexibility
  • no decision making ability
  • lack of recognition for employees
What can be done?
The best way to reduce stressful work is to eliminate its causes. Employers can
  • clearly define jobs and responsibilities
  • encourage employee participation and decision-making
  • offer flexible work hours
  • give workers opportunities to learn new skills
  • provide training and mechanisms for resolving workplace conflict
